Objectives Childhood and adolescence are critical periods for mental health development and intervention. Untreated childhood and adolescent mental health conditions can lead to impaired long-term functioning. Despite this fact, less than 25% of Canadian youth have adequate access to mental health treatment. Mobile mental health crisis teams can therefore be an important outreach intervention. This systematic review explores the literature around mobile crisis teams for youth identifying team composition, Methods We conducted a systematic review of mobile mental health crisis teams for youth. The inclusion criteria were as follows: 1) English language studies focused on the topics of mobile crisis intervention teams/youth outreach; 2) outcome data available (including but not limited to demographics, hospital admission rates, presenting complaints); and 3) studies focused on services provided to children and youth aged 0 to 25 years. A total of 11,795 abstracts from 4 databases were initially Results Studies consistently described that mobile mental health crisis teams for youth prevented subsequent presentations to the hospital and allowed for community-based treatment. One study also demonstrated high service utilization and rapid response times, with statistically significant improvements in mental health outcomes. At-risk populations may particularly benefit from mobile crisis services. Conclusions The literature regarding mobile mental health crisis teams for youth is sparse. Nonetheless, this review indicates that these teams have positive outcomes compared to traditional care, including reducing rates of emergency department visits and unnecessary hospitalizations. Our findings support the inclusion of mobile mental health crisis teams for youth as part of the mental health system to provide enhanced and efficient patient care.
