Recently, the benefit of resistance training (RT) for glycemic control has been increasingly noted in clinical practice in type 2 diabetes. This metaanalysis aims to review this benefit. An electronic literature search using MEDLINE and EMBASE(up to Jun.23, 2013) was conducted for randomized controlled trials with a parallel design that investigated the effect of RT on changes in HbA1C (A1C). Net effect (i.e. mean difference (MD) in A1C change between RT groups and non-RT groups was pooled with a random-effects model. Of 2281 articles retrieved from literature searches, we analyzed 25 eligible studies consisting of 606 patients assigned to RT and 717 patients assigned as non-RT controls. In 21 studies that compared the RT and non- RT control groups, the reduction in A1C was greater in the RT group than in the non-RT group (MD [95% CI],-0.3%[-0.5 to -0.1%] (Figure). However, in 10 studies that compared the effect between RT and aerobic training (AT), the effect on the A1C change was smaller in the RT group than in the AT group (MD [95% CI], 0.2% [0.1 to 0.4%]) (Figure). In the 2 eligible studies on the effect of adding RT to AT, adding RT provided no additional A1C reduction (MD [95% CI], 0.1% [-0.4 to 0.5%]). In conclusion, RT contributed to a reduction in A1C compared with non-exercise, but the benefit was likely to be smaller than for AT. (Figure Presented).
