Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by the progressive death of dopaminergic neurons that are located within the substantia nigra. Clinical manifestations include bradykinesia, resting tremor, rigidity, and/or postural instability. The Parkinson’s Foundation estimates there to be 680,000 cases of PD among those 45 yr and older in the United States, with 1,238,000 cases projected for 2030. Because the cause of PD largely remains idiopathic, treatment centers on managing symptoms and improving quality of life. The objective of this systematic review is to investigate the literature surrounding exercise treatment modalities for the improvement of motor symptoms in Parkinson’s patients. For this study, we examined articles published on human clinical trials within the past 5 yr for this. Interventions include aquatherapy and resistance training.
